Tools to support writing
Tools for correction, paraphrasing, or translation are now a common part of both academic writing in a second language and everyday writing. This guide provides a list of tools categorized by their primary purposes selected based on quality and accessibility. Each tool listed has been evaluated using several criteria: main features, price, limitations, extensions, interface, and safety, with additional notes on other important functionalities.
Since language tools are continuously evolving, much of the information here may change in the future. However, everything provided is up-to-date (August 2025).

What is this guide for, and how to use it?
This guide has three main sections grouped according to purpose of the tools:
- Academic Writing: tools suited to the specific needs of students, scholars, and researchers.
- Everyday Writing: tools that help with quick corrections (e.g., writing an email).
- Multilingual Users: tools designed for writing in a second language; they usually let you choose from many different languages.
What is the difference between tools designed to enhance language and chatbots such as ChatGPT or Gemini?
Tools listed here were purposefully designed primarily to correct grammar and enhance language; suggested edits are precise and conservative. Many of these tools include an editor that flags issues as you type and clearly tracks all changes. These tools tend to be less “risky” than chatbots because they typically produce fewer hallucinations and unintended rewrites.
As artificial intelligence becomes more and more part of the writing process, some standards and processes should be followed when conducting research with AI. These depend on what you are researching, your audience, and which tools you used in your work. If you would like to learn more about how AI can be useful in the research process, refer to our guide.
Ethical aspects of writing with language grammar correctors and AI
Before you use such tools, always check your institution’s (or publisher’s) guidelines, which may specify various AI use policies. For example, some institutions allow students to use tools for grammar corrections without having to cite them, since they are considered common in formal text correction. If, however, the tool changes the content of a work, it is usually necessary to acknowledge you used the tool. In some cases, using such tools may even be prohibited.
